The Devil Went Down to Texas

October 31, 2008 · 17 Comments

This just in from perhaps Heck’s biggest fan, Dawn Cline: teacher and librarian at Timberwood Middle School.

“Timberwood Middle School is in Humble, Texas (oxymoron!). It’s named after Humble Oil, which is now Exxon. We’re about 30 miles northeast of Houston. We’re still picking pine needles out of our back sides due to Hurricane Ike. The students pictured are sixth and eighth graders. The eighth graders are some of my amazing student assistants.”

This makes it official: Timberwood Middle School is most DEFINITELY near the top of my list of favorite Texas children’s learning institutions northeast of Houston!
Congratulations! I am, however, rather jealous of the poster. I didn’t even get a Heck poster! Man…

Well okay then…Mr. HECK…so if you want a poster, all you have to do is ASK! This is Kristen Gladden, Dawn Cline’s librarian BFF, and I have that fantastic poster maker, and if it’s okay with you, my daughter who is a twenty-year-old muralist wants to paint your cover on my wall. How do you feel about that? The Bearcats at Ross Sterling Middle are about to get a BIG dose of HECK and don’t even know it yet. Thanks for sharing yor book! BTW, Ross Sterling was Humble’s first oil man…what’s with us and oil?…oh, and if you go to http://www.humbleisd.net/libraryart you can see all of the other murals that Meighgan-the- Artist has painted!

Oh. Em. Gee! I’m feeling global! If I didn’t love my job so much, I’d quit and be your publicist! Hmm…I might not have a choice if our district’s bond issue doesn’t pass. Our superintendent (very nice man who works hard for us) visited TMS yesterday and died laughing when I told him about Heck and showed him your blog. Hey…how do you pronounce your last name? The 8,391 copies of Heck, along with the autographed copy, should arrive today! You’ll hear me squealing when they arrive. Isn’t the weather up there in the Arctic Circle turning ugly yet? Wanna come south?:)

Is it two or three posts that constitute stalking? Cross your fingers…going to talk with my principal about doing a book club with Heck…have to think of a catchy name. The students are really excited about the possibility! Watch your sales soar!

Wow, so many comments to comment to. Firstly, because Dawn kind of scares me in the best possible way, my last name is pronounced “Bay-see,” like Count Basie, which is an obvious connection when one sees me. The name is also best pronounces after a glass of brandy (or whomever). I’m not sure why, but that’s just how these things go. Secondly, I would love a poster, but even MORE so would love to see a Heck mural in your fine school! I’m sure Bob Dob, the gifted artist responsible, would as well (as would his lawyers…nah, just kidding…I think). Thirdly, a Heck book club…awesome! Names…hmm…by Book or By Crook? Read ‘Em and Weep? Where the Bad Books Go? I’ll keep thinking…I’d be more than happy to do a live chat or something like that to answer any questions the kids might have (but keep them simple…no algebra). And, lastly, Jimmy AKA wolf: most authors would advise you to not eat their books, but considering the current state of the average American’s diet, it’s probably one of your healthier meal options (a great source of fiber). Plus, if you eat it before you read it, then it almost guarantees more Heck sales. If you eat the book in public and appear visibly satisfied, you could create the next food phenomenon. More power to ya, Jimmy AKA Wolf the Book Down!

Hey your book is so hilarious i enjoy it so much. Ms.Cline asked us where the name Milton came from and I said it was John Milton who wrote Paridise lost. And i found the quote from Dante’s Inferno “all hope abandon ye who here”

    Yours Truly

THE BOOK HECK IS ONE OF THE MOST COOL BOOK I HAVE EVER READ

  • Alexis // December 12, 2008 at 11:33 pm | Reply

This book is SO FREAKING AWESOME! Only on pg. 109 but I can’t wait to finish it. I think its funny how the book is always making fun of someone in history……or something like that anyway. It makes me LOL!!!!!!

P.S. my fave character is Lucky…….I like ferrets…..and he is lucky,obviously.hehe.

You guys are crazy cool. Thanks for all the comments and insights into the book I wrote, like, two years ago! Your book club—the first of its kind, I believe—has made my dismal freezing rain Portland day.

A quick response to some of your comments:

    1) If you like Marlo, there’s more of her in the next book, Rapacia. It’s mostly her, though still tons of Milton, obviously. And she is set loose upon the coolest mall in the afterlife…

    2) Yes, Milton is from John Milton. Most every name in the book is a reference to something. Mainly because I can’t think of names, so I have to respectfully borrow from others! Good catch on the “All Ye Who Enter…” sign. Perhaps my fave reference is when Lucky loses his dice collar, and Milton posts the note in the Cafeterium: “Milton’s pair of dice lost”…get it? Milton’s Paradise Lost? It’s how I amuse myself when desperately trying to come up with a story of some kind.
    3) Yes, Lyon and Bordeaux are both Paris Hilton clones (first name, a French city. Second name, a big hotel chain). They meet some similarly ditzy, self-absorbed friends in the third book, Blimpo.
    4) I like ferrets too, as long as they don’t spray me with musk. You never forget when you’re musked by a ferret. Never. You don’t feel so very Lucky.

Shine on you fabulous assortment of freaks!

    I guess you don’t…I don’t know because I’ve never been musked by a ferret. I’m a freak…..AWESOME!haha.hehe.

Actually, I’ve never read the book. Everyone loves it so it’s been on hold like FOREVER!!! I would like to read it. It’s obviously very popular.

    Dear Andy/ydnA
I can not recommend strongly enough purchasing your own copy of Heck: Where the Bad Kids Go. Even the most sanitary of libraries can become seething Petri dishes of disease. Don’t your fingertips deserve a clean copy beneath them? Who knows what awful thing the previous reader did to that copy? I shudder to think. And not only do I recommend purchasing your own copy, I recommend purchasing three copies: one for saving (a collector’s copy), one for reading, and one for travel. Only in this way will you ever truly know happiness.
